REORGANIZED SUPPORT FOR MILITARY/VETERANS HOLDS MEETING AS ARMED FORCES SUPPORT COMMITTEE

CLOVIS, NM (March 21, 2024) –  The Armed Forces Support Committee met for the first time on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024 in Clovis. The committee’s purposes following its reorganization from its original Local Growth Management Committee name, is to support military related organizations within the area, including Cannon AFB, veterans’ organizations, Employers Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR) and others, by working with federal, state and local agencies.  The committee consists of eight elected officials from Curry/Clovis, and Roosevelt/Portales. 

The AFCA received reports from Senator Lujan and Representative Leger Fernandez’ offices regarding MILCON funding and support for Cannon Air Force Base. They received a report from Cannon AFB from Interim Chief of Staff Rob Stressman who also commented regarding the tremendous support provided by the area counties in relation to Cannon. 

The New Mexico Military Base Planning & Support Commission’s executive director Rich Glover, advised regarding their commission’s work in addressing reciprocity licensure, childcare, education, and healthcare, which is a challenge not only at the state and local level, but nationally.  

Other reports were received regarding Air and Space Force Civic Leader activities, Base Community Council, Committee of 50, Portales Military Affairs Committee, area veterans’ groups and ESGR.  David Robinson, who serves on the Air and Space Force Civic Leader program, and the Base Community Council, advised Tuesday “Community support for the base has always been firmly fixed in place, and this committee demonstrates we are the steadfast line behind Cannon AFB.”

“The AFSC is a tremendous opportunity to come together to hear the needs of the military, including veterans and their families in our area,” advised AFSC Chairman Clovis Mayor Morris, Tuesday. “Working together, we can address those needs, and raise awareness of the outstanding work being done in the communities to support the military, area veterans and their families.”
