Clovis Police Department to Host 2023 National Night Out

FINAL-NNO-7.25.2023-1

CLOVIS, NM July 24, 2023 – On Tuesday, August 1 from 6:30pm to dark, at Greene Acres Park, neighborhoods throughout Clovis are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “40th Annual National Night Out”, crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by Clovis Police Department, will involve over 15,000 communities from all 50 states. In all, over 37 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime”. The National Night Out Against Crime began in 1984.

National Night Out is designed to:  heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for, and participation in, local crime prevention efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Sergeant Moe Parker of the City of Clovis Police Department said National Night Out allows children to interact with law enforcement and see that officers are there to help.

“It brings the community out, shows a presence – that the community itself is not going to stand for crime in the neighborhood,” he said. “And it fosters a closer relationship with the police and the community.”

Fun and games for kids and adults will be available. Local agencies, both patrol and specialty vehicles will be on display. Child ID Kits, information handouts, local officers to answer questions, plus many more interactive stations will be available. Some of the participating agencies are Clovis Police, New Mexico State Police, Curry County Sheriff’s Department, Emergency Management, Cannon Security Forces, and several more.

The City is expecting Aerocare to land their helicopters during this event. Some activities include a Dunk-A-Cop dunking booth, doughnut eating contest, caution tape maze, Curry County DWI Task Force DWI Karts, bouncy houses, and SWAT display.

New this year, kids will be able to dip their hands in washable, non-toxic paint and place their hands on a vinyl police banner that will later be displayed at the police station. The activity is hoping to send the message: “We all have a hand in fighting crime.”
